Transitioning from Physical to Digital Drawing

Artist botanical art botanicals digital illustration Illustration ipad line drawing procreate tattoo youtube tutorial

I used to always use my trusty sketch book, pencils and fine line pens before realising that I could be putting my iPad Pro to better use that just Instagram and Pinterest!

I now use procreate on my iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil. It took some time to get used to my new medium and I didn't do it without some help along the way.

You tube has a wealth of tutorial videos for Procreate and found tutorials by Emma Lefebvre, Ghost Paper and Nap Time Alternative particularly helpful.

I also bought some pro create brushes from True Grit Texture Supply. There are loads of bespoke fonts and brushes you can buy as add ons for Procreate.

At first I really struggled with getting clean lines while drawing on my iPad but great tip I learnt was to buy a matte screen protector which adds resistance and mimics drawing on paper rather than a super shiny screen. I really found this improved my digital drawing.

Finally and most importantly was developing my own style. During lockdown I followed tattoo artist Rebecca Vincent’s drawing tutorials on instagram. This inspired me to try black and white line drawings, after experimenting I moved away from the stipple work and developed the heavier line shading I use today.
